For plenty of farm businesses, tax planning and the annual bank review both come around as the financial year closes. The March 2027 intake of Plan to Profit starts on Monday 8 March, before sowing gets busy, and finishes in late May. You go into 30 June and your next bank meeting with figures you built yourself and can explain line by line. It is an accredited online farm business course from Tocal College, designed by P2PAgri owner Mike Krause.

Know what your bank needs to know

One of the course's core outcomes is understanding what banks need to know about your business, and then being able to show them. Over the 12 weeks you estimate the current season's profit, equity, key bank ratios and business efficiency, and you learn how Return on Assets Managed and Return on Equity describe the health of the whole operation. If getting a better deal from your bank is on your list this year, this is the groundwork.

You finish with a business plan for the next three to five years, the kind of document a lender expects to see. Our guide to a farm business plan for the bank explains why it matters.

Reports built from your own numbers

Everything is done in P2PAgri cloud software with your own farm's data, which stays confidential between you and your trainer. Four of the five assessments are financial reports produced from P2PAgri's PDF reporting, and the fifth is a set of short-answer business planning questions. Each one gets feedback, you have up to three attempts, and all tasks are in by week 11.

You get free access to P2PAgri for the 12 weeks of the course. After that it continues as a paid subscription unless you cancel under Settings > Subscription. Either way you can export your PDF reports and CSV cash flow budgets.

I valued the performance charts at the end of each year to see where you are at and compare it to every other year - also handy to have for the bank

How the 12 weeks run

The course is online via Zoom. There are five group interactive sessions on weekday mornings from 9am, each two to three hours, and five private one-hour coaching sessions with your trainer in between. Group sessions are recorded and posted the same day. Coaching sessions are not recorded. Allow at least six hours a week including homework. Session dates for the March 2027 intake are confirmed by Tocal on enrolment.

Trainers who know how lenders think

Mike Krause has 40 years in farm financial modelling, sensitivity analysis, farm business consulting and agricultural risk management, and wrote the course text, Farming the Business, for GRDC.

Tony Hudson is senior farm finance trainer for the Rabobank Financial Skills course run by Rabobank's Client Council, a former Director of Farm Business Management at Marcus Oldham College, and runs Hudson Facilitation. Your trainer will be Mike, Tony or Peter Hudson, and assessments are marked by James McRae, trainer and assessor for Tocal's online AHC50122 Diploma of Agriculture.

Fee free to eligible applicants

The indicative fee is $3,100 (GST free), and the course is fee free to eligible applicants. Tocal confirms eligibility, so if you are unsure, contact a Tocal skills training coordinator. Plan to Profit is not an entry-level course. You need basic experience with financial transactions and farm budgeting, a computer, tablet or smartphone with reliable internet, and a willingness to use your own farm data.
